The Sun: Life, Strength and Mental Illumination

Posted on Facebook by Samoa Lualima

In the Edgar Cayce Life Readings, the Sun appears in several related ways. It is the physical centre of our solar system and the source of the light and heat that sustain earthly life. It is also described as an environment or sphere of consciousness that may leave impressions upon the soul. Finally, it is used as a spiritual symbol of life, strength, truth and illumination. The readings do not explain the Sun’s realm as fully as they explain Mercury, Venus or Jupiter, so it is important not to create a detailed doctrine beyond what the texts actually say. Nevertheless, the central idea is clear: solar experience is connected with life-giving power, mental strength and the ability to express light. Its highest purpose is fulfilled when strength becomes encouragement, knowledge becomes illumination and personal power becomes service.

The Sun as the Source of Earthly Life
Reading 805-4 gives the clearest physical meaning of the Sun: “The Sun is the source of life in materiality in the earth.”
This does not mean that the physical Sun is God. It means that within the material conditions of Earth, sunlight and heat make biological life possible. Plants receive solar energy, animals and people depend upon plants, and the rhythms of nature are organised around the Sun’s activity. The Sun therefore becomes a natural symbol of life flowing outward. It gives light without demanding that the Earth repay it, and its rays reach the strong and weak, the rich and poor, the grateful and ungrateful.
Reading 1316-1 describes the Sun as: “Giving life and heat.” The reading connects this activity with: “The mineral, the vegetable, or the animal kingdom.”
The physical Sun is thus presented as a visible reminder of the creative life supporting the whole earthly environment. Spiritually, its example suggests generosity, constancy and the giving of oneself for the growth of others. A person expressing the higher solar principle may bring hope into a discouraged situation, awaken activity where people have become passive or help another person recognise the strength that already exists within.
The Sun Within the Soul’s Journey
Reading 413-1 places the Sun within the soul’s larger movement through the solar system. It says that the soul passes: “Through these spheres—the sun, the planets, the earth.”
Through these experiences, the soul gathers qualities and learns how to apply them. The reading says that the soul develops toward becoming: “One WITH the whole, yet NOT the whole.”
This means that the soul moves toward conscious unity with God without losing its individual identity. It remains itself while increasingly understanding its relationship with the whole of creation. The Sun is included among the spheres contributing to this development.
Reading 2425-1 describes astrological sojourns as: “Those phases of our—or the entity’s own—sun’s environ.”
This wording suggests that the entire system of planetary experiences exists within the larger environment of our Sun. The Sun is not simply another object placed beside the planets. It is the central physical power around which the solar system is organised.
Reading 1632-3 calls the Sun: “The ruling power or force” within the solar system. This does not mean that the Sun controls the soul’s moral choices. It refers to the Sun’s central place within the physical order of the system. Spiritually, this may represent the need for a central ideal around which the different parts of life can be organised. Without such a centre, personal abilities, desires and planetary urges may pull in many competing directions.
The Sun as a Realm of Consciousness
The Life Readings sometimes speak of the Sun as an influence, environment or consciousness. Reading 3299-1 says: “The planets, the constellations, the sun and the moon each have their environs or their influences.” The same reading explains that these influences depend upon: “The manner of the entity’s manifestation in same.”
This is important because the Sun does not produce exactly the same qualities in every soul. The result depends upon what the soul experienced within that environment and how those opportunities were used. Solar influence may therefore appear as confidence, vitality, mental brightness, leadership or the desire to express oneself, but these qualities can develop constructively or selfishly.
Reading 3031-1 refers to: “Those consciousnesses that are at times accredited to the activities in the sun, the moon, Jupiter, Uranus, Mercury, Mars.”
This language helps us avoid imagining a physical human body living on the burning surface of the Sun. Like the other planetary sojourns, the solar experience is best understood as an environment or state of consciousness. What is gained there becomes part of the soul and may later appear as an innate urge during earthly life.
Reading 1598-1 says that these influences become part of each soul: “Because they—those influences—are a part of the experience of each and every soul.”
Solar qualities are therefore not foreign powers acting upon a helpless person. They are connected with experiences already held within the soul’s deeper consciousness.
The Sun’s Influence Upon the Mind
Reading 264-31 gives one of the most direct descriptions of the Sun’s effect: “The Sun’s activity on the mental has wielded and does wield a powerful influence in the affairs, the activities, the thoughts of the entity.”
This connects the Sun with mental energy and the ability to direct thought into purposeful activity. The Sun does not merely represent physical vitality; it may also symbolise the power to bring clarity, confidence and direction into human affairs.
Mental illumination is more than gathering information. Mercury may help the mind collect, analyse and communicate facts, but the Sun gives life and direction to what the mind knows. An idea becomes illuminating when it helps someone see the way forward. Knowledge becomes light when it removes fear, confusion or misunderstanding.
A constructive solar influence may therefore help a person speak with confidence, organise activity around a clear purpose, encourage others or bring hope into a discouraged group. The danger is that mental strength may become domination, certainty may become pride and leadership may become a desire to control. Solar brightness is spiritually valuable only when it helps others see more clearly.
The Sun as Light, Truth and Righteousness
Sunlight reveals what darkness conceals. For this reason, the Sun naturally becomes a symbol of clarity and truth. Reading 3037-1 describes the Sun within a symbolic seal as: “The sun as of righteousness.”
The phrase suggests a light that does more than provide information. It reveals the right direction and calls the person toward constructive action. Truth is not simply something to be known; it must become a way of living.
The same reading speaks of: “The spiritual source of light in the sun—both s-u-n and s-o-n.”
This wordplay connects the visible Sun with the spiritual meaning of the Son. It should not be understood as saying that the physical Sun and Christ are identical. The physical Sun is part of creation, while Christ represents the divine pattern of truth, love and unity with God. The Sun becomes a useful symbol because its physical activity resembles a spiritual truth: as sunlight brings warmth, visibility and growth to the material world, the Christ Spirit brings love, understanding and spiritual life to the soul.
Reading 3037-1 also says: “The Cross, the way; the Mind then the Builder.”
The Sun may illuminate the path, but the individual must still choose what will be built through thought and action. Light reveals possibilities; it does not make the soul’s decision.
The Sun and the Christ Light
The relationship between the Sun and the Christ Light must be expressed carefully. The physical Sun is not Christ, and Christ should not be reduced to a force within the physical Sun. However, the Sun can serve as a visible sign of spiritual light. Its ability to give warmth, sustain life and overcome darkness makes it a powerful symbol of the Christ ideal.
Reading 513-1 makes a revealing distinction when it refers to people being misunderstood as: “Sun worshipers, but the Son spelled the wrong way.”
This suggests that some ancient teachings associated with the Sun may originally have pointed beyond the physical heavenly body toward the divine Son or spiritual source. Over time, the symbol may have been mistaken for the reality it represented.
The higher solar lesson is therefore not to worship the physical Sun but to become a bearer of spiritual light. The soul receives life, strength and understanding so that these qualities may be expressed as hope, truth, love and service. The Sun is the sign; the divine source remains God.
Strength, Confidence and the Use of Will
Several Life Readings connect the Sun directly with strength. Reading 2990-2 says: “In the Sun the strength and in the Moon the weakness.”
Reading 1261-1 gives a more balanced statement: “In the Sun, the Moon, we have strength, we have weakness.”
Here, strength may include confidence, vitality, courage, firmness, endurance and the ability to act. The contrast with the Moon does not mean that the Sun is good and the Moon is bad. The Sun radiates and expresses, while the Moon receives and reflects. Human beings need both strength and sensitivity.
Reading 2988-2 adds an important qualification: “In the Sun we find both the weakness and the strength.”
Solar power may therefore become constructive or destructive according to its use. Strong will may become courage or stubbornness. Confidence may become leadership or pride. Mental brightness may illuminate others or make them feel inferior. The Sun does not guarantee spiritual strength; it represents a capacity or urge that must be directed by free will.
Reading 1261-1 explains how strength becomes active: “When it has taken thought and the strength again is urged forth by the will, all of these take their rightful place in the experience as they should.”
This presents a clear pattern. First the mind examines the situation, then the will chooses a direction, and finally inner strength carries the choice into action. Mental light reveals what should be done, spiritual will accepts responsibility and solar strength makes application possible.
The Sun and Emotion
Reading 1401-1 says: “The moon and the sun are the ruling of the emotions.”
The Sun’s relationship with emotion appears different from the Moon’s. The Moon is receptive, sensitive and changeable, while the Sun supplies energy, direction and expression. The Moon may feel an emotion deeply, while the Sun gives that emotion power to become action.
Love may become encouragement, hope may become courageous effort and compassion may become service. Yet anger may become confrontation, pride may become self-assertion and desire may become an attempt to control others. The Sun gives power to expression, but the person’s ideal determines what will be expressed.
This is why emotional strength must be spiritually directed. Someone who feels strongly and acts quickly may inspire others, but the same person may overwhelm them. Solar emotion needs patience, humility and consideration so that strength supports life rather than injuring it.
Leadership, Visibility and Selflessness
Because the Sun occupies the centre of the solar system and radiates light, it naturally suggests leadership and visibility. A strongly solar person may attract attention, speak with authority or become a centre around which group activity is organised. This can be constructive when leadership gives people direction, courage and unity. It becomes destructive when the individual expects everything and everyone to revolve around personal plans.
Reading 2988-2 connects solar strength with Jupiter’s broader consciousness and says that the individual must develop: “More and more of selflessness” to become: “The greater channel of blessings to others.”
This gives the spiritual test of solar power. The greater a person’s strength, visibility or influence, the greater the need for selflessness. True leadership does not gather all light toward itself. It uses personal strength to awaken the abilities of others.
A constructive solar leader does not merely tell people what to do. Such a person gives courage, provides direction and helps others become stronger. The solar gift is fulfilled when people leave the individual’s presence with greater hope and confidence rather than fear or dependence.
The Danger of Pride and Extremes
Reading 633-2 warns that abilities connected with the Sun and Mercury may become: “Stumblingblocks.”
It says that without the correct use of will, people may become: “EXTREMISTS.”
Solar strength can become excessive. The person may become too certain, forceful or convinced of personal importance. The individual may believe that because something appears clear to them, everyone else must understand it in exactly the same way.
Mental illumination becomes dangerous when humility is lost. A bright mind may expose error but fail to show compassion. A strong leader may achieve visible results while injuring people along the way. The higher solar power is not merely brilliance; it is life-giving brilliance.
The test is whether a person’s strength helps others grow. If people become fearful, dependent or diminished, solar power is being misused. If they become stronger, clearer and more hopeful, the influence is becoming constructive.
Physical Sunshine and Individual Sensitivity
Some Life Readings also refer to physical sunlight and its effect upon particular individuals. Reading 264-31 says: “On dark days with little sunshine there is an appreciable manifestation of fear and dread.”
This was an observation about one individual rather than a universal rule. It shows that some people may be unusually sensitive to the presence or absence of sunlight. The reading also explains that the individual could alter the response by using spiritual will rather than allowing the influence to dominate.
Other readings sometimes recommend sunshine for particular physical conditions, but such advice belongs to those individual cases and should not automatically be applied to everyone. Physical sunlight, mental strength and spiritual illumination are related ideas within the readings, but they are not identical. A symbolic teaching about light should not be turned into general medical advice.
The Sun and Moon Together
The Life Readings frequently place the Sun and Moon together. Reading 264-31 says: “The Moon and the Sun—as well as planetary sojourns—affecting the physical as well as the mental and soul being.”
Reading 317-4 describes their phases as: “Impulses in the experience through certain periods of the present sojourn.”
The Sun and Moon represent complementary movements within consciousness. The Sun radiates while the Moon reflects. The Sun strengthens while the Moon sensitises. The Sun expresses while the Moon receives. Together, they symbolise the balance between action and reflection.
Strength without receptivity may become harshness, while sensitivity without strength may become instability. The balanced soul learns when to act and when to listen, when to lead and when to receive, when to speak clearly and when to reflect in silence. Solar strength reaches its highest expression when it protects sensitivity rather than overpowering it.
The Sun Is a Sign, Not a Master
The Life Readings repeatedly reject the idea that the Sun’s position controls human destiny. Reading 1353-1 says: “Not that a certain position of the planets or the sun or the moon will force the entity.”
Reading 852-12 explains that urges arise from the soul’s experiences within environments rather than simply from: “This or that season of the Sun’s influence upon the earth.”
Reading 1597-1 reverses the usual astrological picture by saying: “The ENTITY has influenced the stars or the planets, or the various phases of moon or sun, by its activity.”
The soul is therefore not a passive object being controlled by heavenly forces. Its own history has created relationships with those environments, and these relationships later appear as inner urges.
Reading 3356-1 says that the stars, Sun and Moon were given to be: “The servants and not rulers of man.”
The Sun may provide light, strength, opportunity and impulse, but it does not make the individual’s moral decisions. The soul remains responsible for how every solar quality is used.
The Sun and Free Will
Reading 1632-3 gives the principle clearly: “It depends upon the will or the choice of the entity, as to whether such an influence becomes constructive or destructive in the experience.”
Solar strength may become courage or domination. Confidence may become faith or pride. Mental clarity may become helpful teaching or severe criticism. Visibility may become inspiring leadership or self-glorification.
Free will does not remove the influence; it directs it. The person cannot always choose which natural abilities or inner urges appear, but can choose the ideal toward which those abilities will be turned. When the ideal is selfish importance, solar power may demand attention and control. When the ideal is the spirit of Christ, the same power may become warmth, hope, courage and guidance.
How the Sun Affects the Soul
The Sun does not automatically make a soul powerful, wise or spiritually illuminated. It represents a consciousness in which strength, vitality, central purpose and expression may be developed. The soul grows when strength becomes courage, confidence becomes faith, leadership becomes service, knowledge becomes illumination and personal vitality becomes encouragement for others.
The soul struggles when strength becomes domination, confidence becomes pride, leadership becomes self-importance, clarity becomes intolerance or personal power becomes an end in itself. These are not fixed qualities imposed by the Sun. They are different ways in which solar energy may be applied. The same strength that dominates can learn to protect, the same confidence that boasts can learn to encourage, and the same brightness that exposes another person’s weakness can learn to illuminate a better path.
The Sun’s lesson is not simply to shine. It is to give light in a way that helps life grow.
The Spiritual Lesson of the Sun
The Sun asks whether the soul can be strong without becoming controlling, confident without becoming proud and visible without constantly seeking praise. It asks whether mental light can guide rather than condemn, and whether personal power can bring warmth and hope into the lives of others.
Reading 3037-1 gives a beautiful standard: “If not the sun, the moon; if not the moon, a tiny star. But keep a light, a hope.”
The purpose is not to become greater than everyone else. The purpose is to keep some form of light alive. One person may influence thousands, while another quietly encourages a family member, friend or neighbour. The size of the light is less important than its faithfulness.
The Sun gives life and light to Earth. In the same way, the soul fulfils the higher solar ideal when its presence gives courage rather than fear, clarity rather than confusion, warmth rather than coldness and hope rather than despair.
The central message of the Sun in the Life Readings is therefore: The soul receives strength and light so that it may illuminate truth, awaken courage and give life to others—but this power must be directed by humility, free will and the spirit of Christ.

Meaning of the Image

The physical Sun on the left represents life, strength and mental illumination. The white-robed figure within the transparent sphere represents the soul experiencing the Sun as a realm of consciousness rather than living upon its physical surface.
The white light above represents the higher Christ Light, clearly separate from the physical Sun. It passes through the soul’s mind and heart, showing that solar strength must be guided by spiritual truth and love. The light flowing toward Earth represents strength transformed into encouragement, leadership and service.
The disappearing crowned shadow represents pride and the desire to dominate. As the soul aligns itself with the Christ ideal, personal power becomes humility and responsibility. Earth, its people and growing plants show the final purpose of solar development: to use light and strength in ways that help life grow.
The central message is: The soul receives strength and illumination not to glorify itself, but to bring courage, clarity, hope and helpful service to others.
