Love as Union With God (Love - Part 5)

Love unites the human soul with divine purpose. It is both practical and spiritual, drawing the will of the individual into oneness with God’s will. This union is lived out daily in patience, service, and eternal faith.

19. Love is both practical and spiritual —
“As we show forth, then, in our speech, in our actions day by day, do we make manifest that which will make for the awareness within our own consciousness of the love, that love, His love, that passeth all understanding in man's life - as man; yet is a practical, personal love that makes for joy in the services that one may render, even in toil, in pain, in misunderstandings that shape the activities of the lives of so many that would walk with Him! ” 262-44
Love is mysterious yet lived in concrete, personal ways.
Love is Beyond Comprehension
The phrase “passeth all understanding” echoes Paul’s words about the peace of God (Phil. 4:7).
It reminds us that divine love is mysterious, infinite, and beyond the limits of human reason.
We can experience it, but we can never fully analyze or define it.
Love is Also Practical and Personal
While divine love is infinite, it is also practical — it takes form in daily acts of kindness, forgiveness, patience, and service.
It is personal — not a vague cosmic energy, but a relationship, embodied in Christ, touching individuals one by one.
Love is both the highest mystery and the simplest action: feeding the hungry, forgiving an enemy, encouraging a friend.
Holding Both Dimensions Together
If we only see love as spiritual and lofty, it can feel out of reach.
If we only see it as practical, we may reduce it to mere human decency.
The truth is that love is both: eternal in essence, but lived out concretely in our words, choices, and actions.
Practical Application
Don’t wait for “big” spiritual revelations — live love today in small, personal ways.
Remember that every simple act of service carries infinite meaning because it reflects God’s love.
Approach relationships with reverence, seeing God’s love at work in the practical details of daily life.
In summary:
Love is a mystery that transcends human understanding, yet it is also down-to-earth — practical, personal, and visible in daily service. To know God’s love is to live it, not just in spiritual contemplation but in ordinary, human ways. “His love, that passeth all understanding… yet is a practical, personal love.” 262-44
20. Love as at-one-ment with God’s will —
“At-onement, then, is making self's will one with the Creative Forces that may become the impelling influence in thought, in mind, that is the builder to every act of a physical, mental or material body.
Then, in making at-onement, the will of an entity, an individual, is made one with the Creative influences in the experience. ” 262-45
Union with God happens when our will aligns with divine purpose. Aligning our will with God’s is for redemption and spiritual growth.
At-Onement vs. Atonement
The reading plays on the word “atonement,” showing it as “at-one-ment” — unity, harmony, oneness.
Rather than a distant theological concept, it describes something deeply personal: the process of bringing our individual will into harmony with God’s will.
The Role of the Will
Human will is powerful — it shapes thoughts, influences emotions, and directs actions.
Left on its own, will can lead to selfishness or separation from God.
But when will is surrendered to God, it becomes an impelling influence for building a life aligned with love and truth.
Union With the Creative Forces
“Creative Forces” in the Cayce readings refers to God at work in creation, the Spirit that sustains all life.
To unite our will with these forces is to live in harmony with the divine pattern of life itself.
This brings peace, strength, and purpose — because we are no longer pushing against God’s flow but moving with it.
Practical Implications
Daily choices are opportunities to align or misalign with God’s will.
Practices like prayer, meditation, and surrender help bring self-will into harmony with divine purpose.
This alignment transforms ordinary acts (physical, mental, material) into sacred expressions of God’s love.
Union Through Love
At-onement is not achieved by force or fear, but by love.
Love unites self with God, not by erasing individuality but by harmonizing it with divine purpose.
This is the ultimate goal of spiritual life: to live so fully in love that our will and God’s will are one.
In summary:
Love as at-one-ment means uniting our will with God’s creative will. This alignment turns every thought, word, and action into a channel of divine love, bringing peace, purpose, and harmony.
21. Love as daily faithful/hopeful service —
“[Love] may find it in looking forward to those days that may come, for the filling of those places that may be made or given in the lives spent in the service of Him who may call that thy face be that which may bring the knowledge of thine life, thine heart, spent in His service day by day.” 262-45
Even ordinary duties become sacred when done in love, revealing Christ until His return. Love is tied to hope, service, and the daily walk with Christ.
Love Expressed in Service
The passage links love directly with service: to love is to serve.
This service is not occasional but daily, woven into the rhythm of ordinary life.
In every duty, task, or responsibility, love turns labor into devotion.
Hopeful Anticipation
The text speaks of “looking forward to those days that may come.”
Love is not only about the present moment but also carries a hopeful expectancy — awaiting opportunities to serve more fully, awaiting Christ’s return, and awaiting the fulfillment of God’s purposes.
Service as Witness
The phrase “thy face be that which may bring the knowledge of thine life, thine heart, spent in His service day by day” points to the witness of a life lived in love.
People should be able to look at our lives — our words, expressions, actions — and see the reflection of Christ’s love.
Love is revealed not only in what we do but also in the spirit and joy with which we do it.
Ordinary Duties Made Sacred
The reading stresses that even simple, daily responsibilities become sacred when done in love and service to Christ.
There is no separation between “sacred” and “ordinary” — everything can glorify God if done with love.
In this way, life itself becomes an offering of worship.
Practical Application
Begin each day with a prayer of dedication: “Lord, may my tasks today be acts of love in Your service.”
Approach responsibilities — work, family, community — not as burdens but as opportunities to serve Christ.
Let your attitude, words, and expressions reveal a heart of love, so others can glimpse God’s presence through you.
In summary:
Love as daily faithful/hopeful service means living each day in patient expectation, letting every duty — great or small — become an offering of love. This transforms ordinary life into sacred witness, revealing Christ until His return.
