1. The Core Definition of Being "Dispossessed"
The Cayce readings present a view of possession that differs greatly from both popular superstition and modern materialism. They do not describe insanity or possession as merely a mythical phenomenon, nor do they reduce it to a simple chemical imbalance within the brain. Instead, they portray it as a disruption in the natural relationship between body, mind, and soul.
According to the readings, the soul expresses itself through the mind, and the mind functions through the physical body. When this communication system is damaged through injury, disease, shock, or trauma, the normal flow of consciousness can become impaired.
"Then, through pressure upon some portion of the anatomical structure that would make for the disengaging of the natural flow of the mental body through the physical in its relationships to the soul influence, one may be dispossessed of the mind; thus ye say rightly he is 'out of his mind.'" Reading 281-24
In this understanding, true mental balance depends upon an uninterrupted connection between the physical body, the mental faculties, and the spiritual self. When the nervous system is compromised, the soul's influence may no longer fully reach the physical organism. The result is not simply confusion or instability, but a condition in which the individual's normal self-governance is weakened, leaving the personality vulnerable to external influences.
Possession, therefore, is not viewed as a random supernatural event. It is the consequence of a breakdown in the harmonious relationship between the body, mind, and soul.
2. The Vulnerability of Substance Abuse: Alcoholism and Possession
One of the most direct causes of vulnerability described in the readings is the abuse of alcohol and other intoxicating substances. Cayce repeatedly emphasizes that alcohol alters both the physical chemistry of the body and the vibrational state of consciousness.
When the conscious mind is weakened and self-control diminished, the individual becomes more susceptible to influences that would normally be rejected by a healthy and balanced nervous system. The readings suggest that disincarnate entities, still attached to earthly desires, may seek expression through individuals who have lowered their natural defenses through intoxication.
(Q) "Does that mean by other entities, while under the influence of liquor?"
(A) "By others while under the influence that causes those reactions and makes for the antagonism, and the very change of the activities. For this body (the husband), if there could be a sufficient period of refraining from the use of alcoholic stimulants and the diathermy electrical treatments used—these would drive these conditions out!" Reading 1183-3
From this perspective, the dramatic personality changes often observed during intoxication are not merely psychological reactions. They may also reflect the temporary intrusion of influences that resonate with the lowered vibratory state created by alcohol.
The readings propose a practical solution. Recovery requires more than willpower alone. The doorway must be closed physically through complete abstinence from intoxicants, while the body's natural energetic balance must be restored through therapies that strengthen and normalize the nervous system. Only then can the individual's sovereignty over mind and body be fully re-established.
3. Biological "Short Circuits" and the Endocrine System
A unique aspect of Cayce's teachings is the close connection he draws between spiritual phenomena and the endocrine and nervous systems. Rather than separating the physical and spiritual dimensions of life, the readings describe them as deeply interconnected.
Particular attention is given to the Lyden gland and the pineal gland, which are portrayed as important channels through which spiritual energies interact with the physical organism.
"There has been the opening of the lyden gland and thus a disturbance through glandular system. Possession at times is the result." Reading 3410-1
"The reaction to the pineal becomes so severe as to short-circuit the nerve impulse; carrying or producing a fluttering or an engorgement in static waves to the base of the brain. Thus periods are caused when there is lack of self-control." Reading 2465-1
The readings suggest that when these systems become overstimulated, damaged, or improperly activated, the result can be a form of energetic overload. This overload may disrupt the normal communication between the cerebrospinal and sympathetic nervous systems, creating what Cayce describes as a "short circuit."
Such disturbances can lead to altered perceptions, emotional instability, loss of self-control, and experiences that modern psychology might classify as hallucinations, psychosis, or dementia. In Cayce's model, however, these symptoms are not viewed as purely psychological. They reflect a deeper imbalance involving the entire body-mind-spirit complex.
This perspective emphasizes the importance of balance and preparation in any spiritual practice. Higher energies are meant to be integrated gradually and harmoniously rather than forced through premature psychic development or reckless experimentation.
4. The Psychological Triggers: Animosity and Hate
Not all vulnerabilities arise from physical injury or substance abuse. The readings repeatedly stress that emotional and moral states can profoundly affect the nervous system and overall spiritual health.
Among the most destructive influences are hatred, resentment, bitterness, and prolonged animosity. These emotions are portrayed not merely as negative attitudes but as forces that gradually damage both the psyche and the body.
"The conditions here, as we find, have been so aggravated by animosities, and by hates, that we have a deterioration in the nerve force along the spinal system; so that this is dementia—and now possession..." Reading 3315-1
According to the readings, persistent hatred weakens the flow of vital energy throughout the nervous system. Over time, this deterioration may undermine emotional stability, cloud judgment, and fracture the integrated relationship between mind and soul.
In this view, forgiveness is not merely a moral virtue. It is a form of spiritual and psychological protection. Love, compassion, and understanding strengthen the nervous system and elevate consciousness, while hatred and resentment gradually erode the foundations of mental and spiritual well-being.
The state of one's inner life becomes a determining factor in whether one remains spiritually centered or becomes vulnerable to destructive influences.
The Sovereign Shield: Protecting the Self
If vulnerability arises through imbalance, then protection arises through alignment. The readings consistently teach that the most effective safeguard against negative influences is the cultivation of a life centered in spiritual purpose, constructive thinking, and daily application of spiritual principles.
The first principle is never to seek psychic experiences for their own sake. Curiosity without preparation can open doors that one is not ready to manage.
"Entities that would seek to find expression through that left open... never open self, my friend, without surrounding self with the spirit of the Christ, that ye may ever be guarded and guided by His forces!" Reading 436-3
The readings repeatedly recommend conscious spiritual protection through prayer, meditation, and attunement to the Christ Spirit. This creates what might be called a spiritual firewall—a state of consciousness that naturally repels influences incompatible with love, truth, and service.
Yet the readings also emphasize that protection is not achieved through mystical techniques alone. Genuine spiritual strength is built through everyday living.
"...these met only by the activities of prayer, meditation, and the application physically made rather than the mental or emotional ecstasies of just gentleness, kindness, patience, brotherly love; these applied, not preached, but applied daily." Reading 3700-1
The ultimate safeguard is not psychic knowledge but spiritual character. Daily acts of kindness, patience, forgiveness, compassion, and service create a stable vibration that strengthens both the nervous system and the soul's influence within the body.
In the final analysis, the readings teach that possession is not primarily a battle between human beings and external entities. It is a question of alignment. The stronger the connection between body, mind, and soul, the less room there is for confusion, fragmentation, or outside interference. The individual who cultivates spiritual balance, physical health, emotional harmony, and Christ-centered living becomes increasingly sovereign within their own consciousness.
Such a person does not merely avoid possession—they embody wholeness.
