The Spirit of Truth: Living God's Presence in Everyday Life

Posted on Facebook by Samoa Lualima

The Edgar Cayce readings present the Spirit of Truth as one of the central principles of spiritual living. Rather than describing it as simply believing correct doctrines or possessing religious knowledge, Cayce consistently portrays the Spirit of Truth as the living influence of God working through the soul and expressing itself in everyday life. Truth is not merely something to be learned or discussed—it is something to be lived. Throughout these readings, Cayce teaches that the measure of spiritual progress is not how much truth a person knows, but how faithfully that truth is expressed through daily thoughts, attitudes, decisions, and relationships.

According to Cayce, the Spirit of Truth begins within every individual because every soul has its origin in the Creator. Our task is not to discover a truth that exists somewhere outside ourselves, but to awaken to the divine presence already within. In Reading 1007-3, Cayce explains that each person should recognize "within the hearts and minds of fellow men that kinship, that relationship" with God. The mission of the soul is to help awaken others to this same awareness by encouraging them to recognize their own relationship with the Creative Forces. Truth therefore begins with seeing every person, including ourselves, as children of God.
The readings also emphasize that truth must always become action. Cayce repeatedly teaches that spiritual knowledge has little value if it remains only an intellectual understanding. Reading 1046-1 explains that mind, spirit, and body are always one, and therefore every thought, purpose, and action should be motivated "by the spirit of truth that is of the constructive nature for the greater numbers." When truth becomes the motive behind our lives, harmony and contentment naturally follow. Truth is therefore measured not simply by what we believe, but by what our lives produce. If our words and actions build, heal, encourage, and benefit others, they reflect the Spirit of Truth.
Cayce further explains that spiritual growth comes through the continual application of truth in everyday relationships. Reading 1058-1 teaches that the soul develops through "the application of the Spirit of Truth" in its dealings with individuals and groups. This choice is made repeatedly throughout the day—in conversations, family life, work, business decisions, and even moments of disagreement. Every encounter becomes an opportunity either to express the Spirit of Truth or to act from selfishness and personal desire.
Another beautiful aspect of these readings is the connection between the Spirit of Truth and reverence. In Reading 1073-4, Cayce describes a past life in which the soul participated in preparing the Temple of Solomon and helped set portions of Psalm 24 to music. He explains that music, prayer, and worship inspire reverence for humanity's relationship with the Creative Forces and awaken the Spirit of Truth within the individual. Worship, therefore, is not valuable merely because of religious ceremony; its true purpose is to awaken an awareness of God's presence and inspire a life that reflects His truth.
The Spirit of Truth is also presented as the foundation of character. Reading 1094-1 reminds us that "Mind is the Builder," but unless our thoughts are founded upon "the spirit of truth, of justice, of hope, of patience, of understanding," they may become a stumbling block instead of a blessing. Truth is therefore much more than factual accuracy. It is expressed through virtues such as justice, mercy, patience, hope, understanding, and love. These qualities gradually shape the character until the entire personality becomes a reflection of the soul's higher nature.
Perhaps the most profound teaching in this collection is Cayce's statement that love itself is the foundation of the Spirit of Truth. Reading 1096-1 explains that genuine love does not seek to exalt itself or another person, but seeks to glorify the Creative Forces. Such love "thinketh no evil," "heareth no evil," and "doeth no evil." Cayce concludes with the remarkable statement, "For it is the basis of the spirit of truth in materiality!" This reveals that truth and love can never be separated. Truth without love becomes harsh and cold, while love without truth loses its direction. The Spirit of Truth always expresses itself through selfless love that seeks the highest good for others.
The readings also teach that the Spirit of Truth should become our constant guide. Reading 1120-1 advises that before making plans for life, we should first establish a spiritual ideal and then allow "the spirit of truth, of justice, of mercy" to guide every material, mental, and spiritual activity. Rather than making decisions based upon personal advantage or worldly success alone, Cayce encourages us to ask whether our choices reflect truth, justice, and compassion. The Spirit of Truth becomes the inner compass that directs every area of life.
This same principle extends into our closest relationships. Reading 1135-1 explains that within every person is the Spirit of Truth, and when two people listen to that inner guidance, they become united in a shared life of spiritual service. Whether in marriage, friendship, or family relationships, lasting unity is created not through personal control or self-interest, but through each person responding to the Spirit of Truth within themselves.
One of the most striking features of these readings is that Cayce does not limit the Spirit of Truth to personal spirituality. He repeatedly applies it to society, politics, business, and leadership. In the 1151 series of readings, leaders are urged to base their decisions upon justice, mercy, brotherhood, and love rather than greed or power. Capital and labor are reminded that they are mutually dependent, and true prosperity comes only when each considers the welfare of the other. Later readings continue this theme, describing truth overcoming fear, selfishness, and conflict through justice, mercy, purity, and brotherhood, while reminding humanity that we are indeed "our brother's keeper." The Spirit of Truth therefore belongs not only in personal devotion but also in every aspect of society where people work together for the common good.
Cayce reduces this daily spiritual struggle to a remarkably simple choice. Reading 1151-8 teaches that every human relationship becomes either "a manifestation of the spirit of truth or that of ego or self-satisfaction." Every conversation, every decision, and every response to another person reveals whether we are acting from love and service or from pride and self-interest. Spiritual growth, therefore, is not determined by extraordinary experiences but by the countless ordinary choices made throughout each day.
Finally, Cayce identifies the Spirit of Truth with life itself. Reading 1151-9 speaks of "the spirit of truth or life or light" flowing through the lives of individuals as constructive spiritual forces. Truth is not static information but a living presence that brings greater clarity, wisdom, compassion, and usefulness wherever it is expressed. It is the light that enables the soul to fulfil its purpose in the material world.
Taken together, these readings present the Spirit of Truth as the active presence of God expressing itself through the soul in every area of life. It is not simply a belief system or a collection of religious teachings, but a way of living that transforms the whole person. It leads us to recognize the divine in every individual, motivates us to serve rather than seek self, inspires justice, mercy, patience, and love, and brings harmony to our relationships, our work, and our communities. In practical daily living, the Spirit of Truth invites us to continually ask a simple but profound question: "Are my thoughts, words, and actions expressing the love, justice, mercy, and service of God, or are they serving only my own ego?" According to Edgar Cayce, the answer to that question reveals whether we are truly living in the Spirit of Truth.

EDGAR CAYCE READINGS

EDGAR CAYCE READING 1007-3

For in the Egyptian sojourn we find that the urge is for the activity as the very nature of the entity, or as the natural source of things; while in the Persian land we find the entity during the first portion of its sojourn was active in such capacity rather because of its material position.
For in that land we find the entity was the sister of the Croesus that was then in authority, or the first Croesus (Croesus being the name of a line of several kings that followed). And the entity in the first portion of its sojourn rather took the place of that ruler, yet found not the answer to that urge within for expression - accepting the custom and conditions as a part of the routine in the associations as one with another.
But through those contacts later with that activity in the "city in the hills and the plains," the entity became aware that indeed in that land there was being manifested that the Lord is in His holy temple in the body of each and every man. And the entity saw that the ministry there was for the awakening or arousing in the heart and mind of each and every soul of that relationship borne to the Creative Force.
Thus the entity realized that it behooves every individual not only to visualize but to recognize within the hearts and minds of its fellow men that kinship, that relationship.
Then we find that the entity's activity became somewhat of the same character as in the Egyptian sojourn, through the presenting of the services to which individuals had been directed; not only because of the entity's abilities as a leader, but through its expostulation, its ministry, its service, and its arousing to activity those who would bring more and more into the experience of others their relationship to the Maker.
So in the present - so in the now - use that knowledge, use that ability; first, in warning others as to the needs of being consistent in their lives day by day.
Such are the missions that ye may fill by thy counsel, sowing thus the seed as ye did in the days of yore; leaving ITS fruition, leaving its reaping to Him that doeth all things well.
For as ye learned, as ye applied through those experiences - in thy voice, in thy activity, in thy purpose, in thy desire, "Others may do as they may, but as for me - I will serve a living God; in that I will sow the seeds of the Spirit of Truth that God is not a respecter of persons but rather the respecter of those who love His ways and His comings."
In this manner may thy life-expression in the present be brought to a crowning of the glories of thy purposes in the material experiences.

EDGAR CAYCE READING 1046-1

As to the abilities of the entity in the present, and that to which it may attain, and how:
Either in a political association or affiliation, or that in which the entity may analyze for others, for groups, for activities, that in the economic life, the material life, for the greater benefit of the greater number, may the entity in the material world find satisfaction.
And in the mental and spiritual, know that though man is a mental body, a spiritual body and a physical body - divided for the purposes of understanding - these are EVER as one, or remain as one. Hence let the thought of the body (for Mind is the Builder), the purposes of the body, mind AND physical, ever be motivated by the spirit of truth that is of the constructive nature for the greater numbers.
Thus we will find that in whatsoever becomes the chosen field of activity or service, HARMONY and contentment will follow in the wake of the entity's service

EDGAR CAYCE READING 1058-1

Yes, we have the records of the entity now known as, or called, [1058]; and those relations with the universe and universal forces, that are a part of the entity's sojourn in the material plane as well as those influences that make for the development of the soul-entity through those environs about the earth.
This entity, as we shall see, has many conditions to meet - which may only be met in relationships to Creative Forces that are made manifest through those experiences of the application of the Spirit of Truth as set in Him, in the relationships to the individuals and groups whom the entity may contact from day to day in the present experience.
The purposes, then, for the entity's entering into activity in the present, that become manifest in the material world, are set before the entity in that in which it may apply itself in its relationships to individuals, to groups, to masses.
Those influences that are emblematical or are of the earth's environs, that will make for omens or helpful influences, are apparent from the entity's activities in sojourns in the earth.
Hence, as we would find, the wearing of the stone lapis linguis would be as an aid in its meditative periods, and would become as a helpful influence. Not as that of "lucky," but rather that as of a helpful influence towards making for the ability to make decisions in dealing with mental attributes.

EDGAR CAYCE READING 1073-4

Before that we find the entity was in the land now known as the Holy Land, during those periods when the shepherd king was in order - or ruled.
It was during those periods when turmoil and strife arose through the rebellions within the household of the king - or David.
The entity then was among the daughters of Adonijah, who was among the first of the sons of David.
As peace began to be restored after the rebellions of Absalom, there came to the entity the greater development as it joined with the sons and daughters and the folk of the king to make the preparations for the establishing and the building of the house of the Lord.
Hence we find within the entity's innate experience a reverence for those things that have been blessed even by man, or that have been dedicated in some way or manner to the service of man's relationship to that he worships as the spirit of truth and hope in his relationships to Creative Forces.
Songs create a reverence, or those things of the nature that tend to make for a reverential inspiration - or blessings, or prayer.
The entity was among the first to set the 24th (twenty-fourth) Psalm to music, or that which is now called a portion of the 24th Psalm. For the entity enjoyed the music of the grandfather upon the harp.
In the name then of Beshe-berea, it may be said that the entity gained; especially in the latter part of its sojourn in that land.

EDGAR CAYCE READING 1094-1

As to the abilities of the entity in the present, then, and that to which it may attain, and how:
Keep and make a balance in self, as indicated. Not only for that pertaining to the physical and mental, but that purposefulness for which the activities may be; and knowing for what expression there is that purposefulness in thine own spiritual self.
For Mind is the Builder; but unless it be founded in that influence not made by might and power, but by the spirit of truth, of justice, of hope, of patience, of understanding, it may become a stumblingblock to the individual.
And as the activities of self are to be in those fields in which there is to be the influence upon the lives and the experiences of many, all the more reason why these shall be founded in the spirit of hope, of justice, of mercy, of patience, of love.
But those fields in which there may be the development of the body for physical prowess, for those activities pertaining to sports, or the preparation of the body for a mental and spiritual activity, will become - and are - those activities in which not only the material but the mental and the spiritual may find the greater hope, the greater peace, the greater understanding.

EDGAR CAYCE READING 1096-1

From Venus we find rather a staid influence, or that attenuating influence that makes for questionings that arise - and may arise - in the experience of the entity.
Hence the necessity of cultivating in the experience of the entity in the present not only earthly friendships, earthly love, but rather that which is the basis OF or the influence PROMOTING same in those relationships as one to another. In other words, that the experience of love is not for the expressions that SELF may be exalted, or that the ones upon whom such is bestowed may be exalted, but rather that the GLORY of the Creative Forces - that prompt same - may be exalted in the earth. Or that, as friendship, as love, as the experience of same becomes a portion of an entity, it is INDEED as the bright and morning star, the lily of the valley, the rose of Sharon; that which brings peace and harmony and JOY in the experience of others!
For it thinketh no evil, it HEARETH no evil, it doeth no evil.
And without it in the experience of each soul, the expressions in materiality become as not worth while; as a drug that saps the abilities for the awakening of hope, of patience, of brotherly love, of kindness.
For it is the basis of the spirit of truth in materiality!
Then, as to the appearances of the entity in the earth and those that make for an influence in the innate urges, we find that the innate urges are not only from the astrological sojourns but from the earthly sojourns - that become as not only expressions of the subconscious or superconscious self but of aroused consciousnesses.
For the variation of man from the kingdoms about him is his awareness of his ability to hurt or to aid others.

EDGAR CAYCE READING 1120-1

(Q) During the next five years, what will be the predominating influences of my life?
(A) Depends upon what may be chosen as the activities. For, as indicated, first there should be the establishing of the home. Then there is to be set in the spiritual realm that which is to be its criterion, its measuring stick, its ideal. Then, these once set, show forth in thy material associations, in thy mental abilities, that the spirit of truth, of justice, of mercy, is THY guide.

EDGAR CAYCE READING 1135-1

(Q) What has been my relation or relations with my wife [1136] in past incarnations and just how can I develop this relationship in the present to mean the most for us both?
(A) In two experiences, as we find, there have been the relationships. Once at variance, as in the period just previous - when the greater disturbances arose ever between the activities respecting the promptings of those for whom the entity acted as the agent, or as an intelligent. The other period of relationships was in the Persian and the Arabian experience; when they were joined in an activity that made for BOTH developing spiritually.
Hence in the applying in the present, let each know that from the spirit of truth - that is present in each - may come the promptings that will bind each in a union of service for that for which each stands in the material world. [GD's note: We later learned that he had divorced Mrs. [1136] and married someone else.]

EDGAR CAYCE READING 1151-12

(Q) What is the significance of the recent activities in which the entity, [1151] has been engaged in respect to bringing together Capital and Labor generally?
(A) This is that same as may be paralleled with the experience of the entity in bringing the better understanding between the POLITICAL situations and the populace situation as related to those of the Roman experience.
Or the practical application in the present is that ye may show forth in the activities of those in authority, that will consider each phase of the experience, the knowledge that while Labor is necessary to Capital - or while Capital is necessary to Labor, Labor is JUST as necessary to Capital! As might be said of the tenon and the key; as might be said of the many such illustrations; and that only when Capital considers Labor's position, and Labor considers Capital's position - and that they coordinate - may there be the good for all, in a manner commensurate with what is expended; in spirit, in truth, in particular.
These then are the activities that are again being enacted as it were before and through the entity of that as He gave, "THIS is the whole law - Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, thy body, thy soul; thy NEIGHBOR as thyself."
This may be exemplified then when Capital and when Labor love one another as brethren. For indeed it is the same cry, "Thou ART thy brother's keeper!"
Whether this is spoken of or to Capital or Labor it IS one and the same. THIS is the significance; that - as in common parlance - "the show is on!"
Do thy duty in the relationships as one to another.
Thou are the counsel, thou art the advisor. But keep the spirit of truth as the guiding factor IN the motivative forces of thy leaders, as near as possible.

EDGAR CAYCE READING 1151-29

GC: You will have before you the entity [1151], present in this room. You will give him an account of his progress in his business and personal affairs as they relate to his life's purposes. You will answer the questions, as clearly and definitely as possible.
EC: Yes, we have the enquiring mind, [1151]; this we have had before.
The progress that is being made may well be described in the vision which occurs here. Conditions have been questionable. Many groups have been upset. [See EC's dream [1151-29, Par. R1] which he related to us on awaking.]
There are the two influences as may be comparable to those bedecked in armor of old; the white charger with the rider well equipped and bedecked in black and gold; then the red charger with the rider bedecked in the blue and white of truth.
This may be interpreted in that they each represent the activities which are apparent in the experiences of the entity, in which there are those influences darkening - in a manner - to the general welfare, and appearing in white but blacks and the shadows; yet fringed with promises of the gold. Then there is the appearing of truth, with red as the leading influence - yet with the spirit of truth, of purity, of that consciousness of the universal nature, as the directing influence.
Also this may be interpreted in that there are the needs for the entity to be in preparation for those influences which must shortly come to pass, when peace is again reckoned as a possibility; and there is the seeking for those channels, ways, means or manners in which all men must share with the products of their labors in a manner commensurate with the efforts applied by each individual.
For, as the black indicates, it is the gold that is in command - yet the piercing influence of fear, even of red - as it carries those influences of white and blue, those forces as of truth, love, brotherhood of man and Fatherhood of God - must become even as the two-edged sword, dividing joint and marrow; cutting - to be sure - but that there may indeed be proclaimed, "I AM MY BROTHER'S KEEPER."
The efforts of the entity, then, have been, are, in meeting just those characters of influences that are between capital and labor, that are between what may be called the INS and the OUTS.
These are periods of testing. The entity is measuring up. Persuade - not by other than right for Right's sake, but persuade - those in authority, those in power, to see the needs more and more for justice to all, love, mercy, grace, to be the foundation upon which lives are built, homes are maintained, nations arise to position of authority. This abused, this misused - all must suffer.
For again, as He hath given, God is not mocked; whatsoever the man soweth, that must he also reap.
Errors are made, judgements are at times misunderstood, but purposes - what are these in the minds and in the hearts of individuals that they harken not?
These are the channels, then, along which the entity must continue. For, through the efforts of the entity much may be accomplished when in '45 to '46 peace again rules in the earth.
Much is to be taken into consideration. Keep ahead, in knowing that justice and mercy are the basic principles in dealings with one another, in dealings with groups, in dealings with states and nations. For these are right in the Lord.

EDGAR CAYCE READING 1151-8

EC: Yes, we have the enquiring mind, [1151], together with the information that has been given respecting individuals, individuals' associations and activities.
In giving first some consideration of that which has arisen in the mind of [1151], respecting the information as to what would be, or SHOULD be, as was given, the attitudes of individuals in their relationships respecting matters in which there have been and are still some differences of opinions:
The approach to these, remember, has been from that angle of what would be the CONSTRUCTIVE experience for each of these individuals. As to whether these individuals would react in the exact way and manner depends upon the INDIVIDUAL. But that as has been indicated IS that which would bring into the experience of each the corrective and creative influences in the experience.
For the way is ever set for man's relationships with his fellowman; for it (the relation) to become a manifestation of the spirit of truth or that of ego or self-satisfaction.

EDGAR CAYCE READING 1151-9

(Q) In what previous incarnations have I known the entity now called Herbert A. Enochs, and how associated?
(A) This we find rather as a correlative influence.
As has been indicated for the entity, there are periods of activity when an influence (disincarnate) would give spiritual aid or help. The association was closer there with that individual, rather than with the entity now called [1151].
Do not allow confusions. But the spirit of truth or life or light, or constructive forces, as it may course through the lives of individuals, becomes so correlative as to be shadowed by others, see?
Hence that entity so correlated with the experiences or life of Garfield (?) as to become that detrimental influence in the EXPERIENCE; and thus the influence, the associations of activities that do not always coincide. For they run as one against another; and others correlating.
