READING 900-23 EXPLAINED
Reading 900-23 is explaining that what we call “environment” is not just the physical world around us, but something much deeper that becomes part of the soul itself and continues even when the soul leaves the body and later re-enters again. Cayce first explains this in a very specific way, saying it relates to “the body, Edgar Cayce, in the psychic state, and the environment of the mind questioning and following the questions and answers given,” but then he expands it to a much broader truth, saying that environment is “the environment creating in the mind the mentality of the physical body in earth's plane, and furnishing that upon which the soul… feeds upon.” In simple terms, everything we experience—our thoughts, habits, people around us, and daily conditions—becomes inner material that the soul lives on and grows from.
This environment does not disappear after death; instead, it becomes like a companion to the soul, because Cayce says it is “the environment as would be the companion of the soul in the spiritual sphere.” He then explains something very important about how the mind works differently in the spiritual realm, saying that “as we find in the spiritual entity the subconscious, the physical world becomes the conscious,” meaning that what is hidden deep inside us now becomes open and active in the spiritual state, while what we call higher awareness here becomes something more internal there. Because of this, the soul continues developing based on the environments it has taken in, “reaching from one sphere to another,” and this growth is not about searching far away for God, because “He is ever near, within each own heart.”
Cayce then brings the idea back to physical life, explaining that when a soul enters the material world again, it comes into “that condition necessary for the entity's development,” and the environment around it becomes part of its subconscious, something “the soul and spirit feeds upon, or develops through.” This means our life situations are not random but are connected to what the soul needs in order to grow. He also explains that a person who lives more from this deeper inner level is considered spiritual, saying “an entity in the physical that lives more in the subconscious is spoken of as a spiritual minded individual,” meaning they are guided more by inner awareness than surface thinking.
He then makes a very strong statement about identity, saying that “in that of the spirit and soul forces thought and memory are as the entity,” which means that our thoughts and memories are not separate from us—they actually form who we are. However, he warns about the role of will, explaining that sometimes will can oppose the deeper needs of the soul, especially when a person avoids necessary growth, saying that when important inner conditions “are willfully banished for the lighter conditions, that would remove the necessary environment, for development,” the person is choosing comfort over growth. At the same time, he cautions not to create imbalance or harsh judgment, reminding that the goal is a “balanced mind,” and that even condemnation from others can become part of one’s environment if taken in.
He then gives very practical advice about relationships, saying “never give to an entity a dictum,” meaning we should not force our beliefs onto others, but instead “outline that as found in self, and let others apply same to self,” because each person’s mind takes what it needs for its own development. He reinforces this with the warning, “think not to stand alone” and also “think not to induce others to think as self,” showing the importance of both humility and freedom in growth.
Finally, he explains how thought itself is powerful and can even be shared between people, saying that when many minds focus together, “the condition becomes accentuated by force… of thought manifested,” and that thought can be transmitted just like physical energies, becoming real “just as light and heat waves in material world are now used by man.” This thought transference happens especially when people are in a deeper state, because “thought transference occurs when both… are in the subconscious condition,” and in that state time is different, because “time in spiritual forces is not as in material forces.” Altogether, this reading is teaching that our environment shapes our inner world, our inner world shapes our soul, and our thoughts, memories, and choices determine how we grow, both in this life and beyond.
KEY IDEAS FROM READING 900-23
1. Environment Becomes the Soul’s Food
“...the environment creating in the mind the mentality of the physical body in earth's plane, and furnishing that upon which the soul, so to speak, feeds upon, and being the environment as would be the companion of the soul in the spiritual sphere.”
What you live in and experience becomes the inner substance your soul grows from.
2. Inner Life Becomes Fully Visible in Spirit
“For, as we find in the spiritual entity the subconscious, the physical world becomes the conscious, in the spiritual, and that known in the physical as the super-conscious, as the subconscious in the spiritual sphere.”
What is hidden inside you now becomes fully known and active in the spiritual realm.
3. Life Conditions Are Designed for Growth
“...environment brings this condition in the development of an entity, through the physical or material sphere.”
Your life situation is not random—it is shaped for your soul’s development.
4. Thought and Memory Form Who You Are
"in that of the spirit and soul forces thought and memory are as the entity."
Your repeated thoughts and memories actually become your identity.
5. Will Can Help or Block Growth
“when thought would take the possession of the inmost soul or being of an entity, that this is as of memory necessary for development of entity; when such conditions are willfully banished for the lighter conditions, that would remove the necessary environment, for development, the body is exercising thought and memory by will's forces. ”
Choosing comfort over truth can stop the growth your soul needs.
6. Don’t Force Truth on Others
“think not to induce others to think as self.”
Real growth happens when truth is chosen, not forced.
7. Thought Is Real Energy That Can Be Shared
“when thought of many individuals are directed to one focusing point, the condition becomes accentuated by force - see? - of thought manifested.”
Focused thought is powerful energy that can influence and connect minds.
READING 900-23
(Q) What is meant by environments carried on to the reentering of the entity?
(A) In this specific place, meant that relating to the body, Edgar Cayce, in the psychic state, and the environment of the mind questioning and following the questions and answers given. In the broader sense, this means the environment creating in the mind the mentality of the physical body in earth's plane, and furnishing that upon which the soul, so to speak, feeds upon, and being the environment as would be the companion of the soul in the spiritual sphere. For, as we find in the spiritual entity the subconscious, the physical world becomes the conscious, in the spiritual, and that known in the physical as the super-conscious, as the subconscious in the spiritual sphere. Hence that entity in the spiritual sphere reaches the developments as attained through the environments, reaching from one sphere to another, as would be given in this: Not who would ascend into heaven to bring God to earth, or who would descend into the depths to bring him up, for He is ever near, within each own heart.
Then, as we see, environment brings this condition in the development of an entity, through the physical or material sphere. We find and entity in the spiritual sphere entering in the material sphere, in that condition necessary for the entity's development in the material sphere. The environments about that entity becoming the portions in the subconscious that the soul and spirit feeds upon, or develops through, by the action upon in the spiritual sphere of the spiritual understanding of conditions. Hence an entity in the physical that lives more in the subconscious is spoken of as a spiritual minded individual.
(Q) Make clear what is meant by "in that of the spirit and soul forces thought and memory are as the entity."
(A) This, as we find, comes in that condition wherein a material entity may wonder whether thought in memory, or memory thought, for we find that the indwelling of the subconscious forces, in the spiritual entity, entering the material planes, bring gradually the thought of the development necessary for the entity's development towards the higher realm. Hence where will again enters into the condition of being the opposition of soul and spirit forces. For we find, when thought would take the possession if the inmost soul or being of an entity, that this is as of memory necessary for development of entity; when such conditions are willfully banished for the lighter conditions, that would remove the necessary environment, for development, the body is exercising thought and memory by will's forces. Not that any entity should enter into any condition that would so unbalance the mind (conscious we are speaking of), as to bring upon itself condemnation but rather that, that will make the balanced mind. For the bringing of condemnation from other minds becomes environment in the mind itself. Separate these. Correlate these as truths given here, for this is the basis of heredity and environment. Break not the will of an entity, rather guide, guard and direct same in those channels through the development, for we all must pay the price necessary for development of self. Hence, never give to an entity a dictum, for that entity. Rather outline that as found in self, and let others apply same to self. For the mind partakes of memory and thought of its own, and takes that necessary for its own development. For, as has been given, think not to stand alone. Immediately given, think not to induce others to think as self.
(Q) Correlate that just given directly to the body, [900], to recent events.
(A) That in the memory of the body [900], correlated with self's development and thoughts on same, relate in this manner: Give thought in self as to conditions that have arisen, for they relate to the thoughts of the individual, [900], and when reached in the subconscious again, which will occur on the 21st, the mind will attain that understanding; yet do not give those thoughts to others, or attempt to force others to think as self, for they do not. We are relating all known development, for we have passed into the subconscious action in a material world. [See 900-26.]
(Q) Give us the relation of evolution and thought transferences. How may thought transference be developed?
(A) Just as has been described, when related to many individuals, we find that when thought of many individuals are directed to one focusing point, the condition becomes accentuated by force - see? - of thought manifested. In evolution, we find the development as has been just given, in the correlation of the human mind and soul, toward perfection. Just so the evolution of the soul came in the attributes of God Mind, and given in Man. As thoughts are directed, the transmission of thought waves gradually becomes the reality, just as light and heat waves in material world are now used by man. Just to in the spiritual planes, the elements of thought transmission, or transference, may become real. Be sure of this fact, and assured of same. Thought transference occurs when both bodies, or entities, are in the subconscious condition, whether for a moment, or whether for ages, for time in spiritual forces is not as in material forces.
