READING 5195-1 PARAPHRASED
We have contact with the body, and the soul is in the process of preparing to depart from it. In the course of earthly life, there are trials far more profound than what people call death—especially when a person’s heart and trust rest in God, who acts with wisdom and purpose in all things.
There is little here that can be explained in purely physical terms. The condition is steadily advancing, bringing increasing difficulty in caring for oneself and in independent thought. Even so, the consciousness still carries a deep concern for those for whom this soul has been responsible in life, wishing that they would recognize the moment and prepare themselves, while they still can, to meet their Creator.
The time is approaching—as it must for every body—when no further earthly work can be done. Each soul must then stand before the judgment seat of its own conscience and honestly ask whether, given its knowledge and opportunities, it can say before God: I have wronged no one, taken nothing unjustly, and where I have erred, I have made full amends.
As this soul moves toward its long rest, remember that others have been entrusted with responsibilities and guidance passed on by this life. Do not dismiss that counsel. The soul is now reviewing past opportunities—moments that will soon no longer be available in this lifetime.
The warnings are clear. Pay attention to them. For divine patience is not endless, and grace is not meant to excuse neglect of what has already been lovingly and repeatedly shown.
This concludes the reading.
READING 5195-1 EXPLAINED
This reading describes a person whose body is slowly failing while the soul is preparing to leave it. Cayce explains that death itself is not the most serious experience a person faces. When someone has placed their trust in God, the passing from the physical body is a natural transition rather than something to fear. The condition being observed is not mainly physical anymore, but a gradual loss of the ability to care for oneself or think clearly, showing that the soul is loosening its hold on the body.
Even as the body weakens, the soul remains aware and deeply concerned for others, especially those it has been responsible for during life. There is a strong desire that loved ones pay attention, reflect, and prepare themselves spiritually while they still have time. As the end approaches, the soul turns inward to face its own conscience, reviewing life honestly and measuring itself not by perfection, but by fairness, integrity, and whether wrongs were acknowledged and made right.
Cayce emphasizes that this moment comes for everyone, when no more earthly work can be done and each soul must stand before its own inner judgment, based on the knowledge and opportunities it was given. As this soul moves toward rest, it leaves behind guidance and responsibility for those who remain. The reading warns the living not to ignore these lessons, because opportunities for change and awakening do not last forever. Witnessing this transition is meant to be a reminder to live with awareness, responsibility, and spiritual readiness while life still offers the chance to do so.
ORIGINAL READING
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body; answering the questions, as I ask them.
EC: Yes, we have the body; and the soul would take leave of same. There are many experiences in a life's journey in the earth that are much more serious than that man calls death, when the trust of the soul and heart of the man is in the Lord, who doeth all things well. There is little interpretation-physical [that would be given] of the disturbance, and it is gradually progressing in the inabilities of the entity to do for self, think for self. Even yet there is in the consciousness the desire that those, for whom the entity has been responsible for their being in the earth, should take note and prepare while they may to meet their God.
For the time cometh, as it must to this body, when no work is to be done but ye must stand before the judgment bar of thine own conscience, as must each soul, and determine as to whether in the light of the knowledge, in the light of thine opportunity, ye can as thy friend, thy God say, "I have dishonored no man, I have taken naught from my brother, but what I restore fourfold."
And remember, as this entity goes to its long rest, there are those whom he has entrusted with an obligation. Do not disregard the counsel. For he has been and is viewing those past opportunities that soon shall come no more in this life. There are the warnings, heed them! For the Lord will not always smile on those who disregard the warnings which have been and are being now, here, made to those whom this body would have heed the warning.
We are through with this reading.
