Psychosomatics - Part 1

Reading 39-5 Paraphrased:

You have come before me before, and the condition you are experiencing now—particularly with the ear—is not primarily physical in origin. What is manifesting in the body is rooted largely in psychological and emotional dynamics. The ear symptoms are an outward expression of inner conflicts and unresolved experiences you are currently moving through.
Although the disturbance originates on a psychic or psychological level, its effects are very real and physical. This happens when insights and understanding you have already gained are not being actively applied. When knowledge is ignored, misused, overused, or withheld, it creates internal strain that eventually translates into bodily symptoms.
To address the physical discomfort, it would help to change or step away from the environments in which this condition continues to arise. The surroundings themselves reinforce the inner tension. Physically, the condition is not severely damaging—but emotionally and psychologically, the lack of expression and application is a significant obstacle.
You are encouraged to actively engage with what you have learned from both your own experiences and the experiences of others. Speak openly. Do not suppress your voice or hold back out of fear. Reach out to those around you, listen to their perspectives, and allow exchange rather than isolation. The issue is not just hearing, but listening and responding.
Regarding your overall physical state, there has been improvement. However, there remains some imbalance, particularly involving the stomach area. External pressure—such as an improperly fitted belt—is interfering with normal bodily function and affecting energy centers that are adapting to new ways of operating. These centers are exploring unfamiliar territory after long-standing patterns, and they need support rather than restriction.
The radium appliance you have been using requires recharging or renewal. Once restored, it should be used daily as previously instructed, with regular reactivation by exposure to strong sunlight or intense light. This restores its energetic potency so it can better support internal balance and centralization.
When asked specifically about the vibrating sensation in the ear at home, the answer remains the same: this symptom is already explained by what has been shared. The key lies not in further analysis, but in practice. Apply what you already know. Enter moments of quiet reflection, and listen inwardly—answers will arise.
Do not remain a passive receiver of insight. Act on it. Embody it. What you are experiencing will resolve not through more information, but through lived integration.

Reading 39-5 Explained

Psychosomatic meaning in Edgar Cayce’s readings
In Edgar Cayce’s readings, psychosomatic means that the mind, emotions, and spirit directly affect the physical body. Thoughts, feelings, attitudes, fears, and unexpressed experiences do not stay only in the mind. When they are ignored, suppressed, or not acted upon, they eventually show up as physical symptoms. Cayce often taught that the body becomes the “voice” for inner conflicts, especially when a person does not apply what they already know or does not express what they feel. Illness, in this view, is not imagined—it is real in the body—but its root cause begins in the inner life of the person.
Psychosomatic explanation of this reading
In this reading, Cayce explains that the ear problem is mainly psychosomatic, not caused by physical damage or disease. The ear symptoms are the body’s way of expressing inner psychological and emotional tension. The person is going through experiences that they do not fully understand or are not fully acting on. They have gained insight and awareness, but they are not applying it in daily life. This creates inner pressure, which then shows up physically as ear disturbance.
Cayce says the problem is especially related to listening, speaking, and responding to life. The person is not expressing themselves freely and may be holding back out of fear or uncertainty. Because they are not “using” what they know—by speaking up, sharing, or engaging with others—the unexpressed energy turns inward and affects the body. The ear becomes the symbolic place where this imbalance appears, representing the conflict between hearing, listening, and responding.
The environment also plays a role psychosomatically. Being in certain surroundings triggers the inner tension again, which is why the symptom appears in specific places. Changing the environment helps because it temporarily removes the emotional stimulus. However, Cayce emphasizes that the deeper healing comes from changing inner behavior—applying insight, communicating openly, and learning from others.
Finally, Cayce encourages stillness and inner listening. By becoming quiet and attentive inwardly, the person can hear what they already know at a deeper level. Healing comes not from gaining more information, but from acting on what has already been learned. When the mind, emotions, and actions come into alignment, the physical symptom no longer needs to express the conflict and can resolve naturally.

Original 39-5 Reading:

GC: You will have before you [39], of Apt. ... West 9th St., Whitestone, L.I., N.Y. You will give the physical condition of this body at the present time, with special reference to the condition of the ear. You will answer the questions which I will ask you regarding this body.
EC: We have had the body here before.
Now, with special reference to the conditions of the ear - here, [39], you find that of the purely psychological condition being manifested in you of many of the conditions of which you have sought reasons concerning, and you find one being demonstrated through that experience through which you are passing at the present time. These interferences, while psychic in nature, are pathological in effect upon the physical body - for the lack of application of knowledge gained works to that of misapplication, or an undue use - or lack of use - of that attained.
In meeting the needs of the body physical - for this we find it is only necessary to change or to remove from certain surroundings under which this condition persists to bring this annoyance. In the physical sense this doesn't hinder. In the sense of non-application this hinders much. Use much then of the experiences of others - speak out! Don't fear! Call on those near and hear what they have to say concerning same.
As to the physical conditions as we have had existent in the body, these we find much improved; yet some conditions - especially as that hindrance as is effected through the position of the stomach proper. There needs be a correction in the fitting of the belt worn, for this in a manner gives an improper incentive for the functioning of those centers that are finding new feelers in a varied field from that of which they have so long functioned. The Radium Appliance needs more charging, or better yet return same for a recharge, see? Then when put in use upon its return, use each day as has been given, but take time for the recharge; that is, by placing in strong sunlight or in the strong light for a period sufficient for the re-activity of the radiating forces to be centralized, or localized for centralization in the body. Ready for questions.
(Q) What is causing the ear to vibrate when at home in Whitestone? What may -
(A) This, as you see, has been treated concerning these conditions. Follow rather those suggestions as have been made here concerning the application of those things as has been gained, and entering into the silence listen and ye shall hear that answering of many things that have been sought for. Be ye not only hearers but doers also of the knowledge attained.
We are through with this reading.
BACKGROUND
1/18/28 Letter: "I seem to have a peculiar condition in my ear. It is alright in the daytime or out of doors but when I come home and enter the house one ear vibrates intensely and am getting all worn out with it as it interferes with sleep. Have been into several houses around here [L.I.] and get the same reaction, but in offices, etc., in N.Y.C. it is quite alright."
