ASFG Lesson 11: The Lord Thy God Is One
(page 88)
1. The Law of God and the Mission of Jesus
Edgar Cayce's Bible class notes begins by asking:
“Do we know the full law of God as related to man?”
The answer is no—not until we understand the purpose of Jesus’ coming into the world. Before Christ’s incarnation, humanity did not possess a complete understanding of what God required from man. People had laws and prophets, but not the perfect example of divine love and obedience embodied in a living human being.
Jesus’ life and death revealed the true law of God—that divine unity and love must govern every level of human existence: thought, word, and action. Through His coming, Jesus made it possible for humanity to recognize their intimate relationship with the Father—a relationship that had been obscured since humanity’s fall into sin.
2. The Origin of Separation (Sin) and the Need for Fulfillment of the Law
When sin entered the world through Adam and Eve, humanity’s perception shifted from unity with God to separation. Eve’s act, influenced by the serpent (symbolizing the self-centered desire for knowledge and independence), represented the birth of self-consciousness apart from God.
Adam had been the original point of contact between divine and material existence—a perfect creation designed to express God in the physical realm. But once the divine order was disrupted by self-gratification, a spiritual law was set into motion:
“Ye shall surely die.”
This “death” did not mean physical destruction but spiritual separation—a state in which humanity became “dead” to divine awareness and alive only to worldly things. As Genesis suggests, “light” represents divine understanding. When Adam and Eve sinned, they lost that full “light” and became aware instead of good and evil—duality replacing unity.
Because God’s laws are unchanging, the process of spiritual reconciliation had to be purposefully and consciously fulfilled. Humanity could not simply be forgiven; the divine order itself needed restoration through a perfect act of obedience and love.
3. The Fulfillment of the Law through Jesus Christ
This restoration was accomplished in Jesus Christ.
He lived every law of God—not only in outward obedience, but inwardly, in thought and intent. He fulfilled divine law mentally, physically, and spiritually, thus bridging the gap between God and man.
When Jesus declared from the cross,
“It is finished” (John 19:30),
He meant that the full purpose of His incarnation had been completed. He had demonstrated divine love’s triumph over separation and self-will. Through His obedience unto death, He transformed the curse of “Ye shall surely die” into eternal life for all who follow Him.
In that act, He reunited man with God. Death no longer held claim over Him, symbolizing the victory of the spirit over material limitation. His resurrection proved that the divine and human could once again be one.
4. Spiritual vs. Physical Death
The “death” spoken of in Genesis referred primarily to spiritual death—the loss of divine awareness, not merely the cessation of physical life.
When humanity chose to focus on material experience, it became “dead” to the full light of God. Jesus, by fulfilling the law of love and oneness, reopened the way to that light, offering the potential for mankind’s full spiritual resurrection.
Thus, to “know God” requires faith that He is, and that He is able to keep His promises (Hebrews 11:6).
Our limitations are not from Him but from our own disbelief or disconnection.
5. The Meaning of Oneness and the Promised Land
The “promised land” in this teaching is not a geographical location but a state of consciousness—the realization of being at one with the Father while still recognizing ourselves as individuals. It is the inner condition where man and God are harmonized in will, purpose, and love.
This corresponds beautifully with Jesus’ final prayer in John 17:25–26, where He said:
“O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.
And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.”
Here, Jesus expresses His mission: to awaken humanity to the consciousness of divine unity—the same love that flows between Father and Son, now made available to all.
6. Living the Law of Oneness
To “know that the Lord thy God is One” means to recognize that all of creation is an expression of that One Source. The law of God is unity—oneness in diversity.
Every division, whether of religion, race, or self-interest, arises from the illusion of separateness.
Jesus’ life teaches that through love, obedience, and daily awareness of our thoughts and actions, we can become conscious co-creators with God. When we fully understand and live this truth, we will—like Christ—know the Father as One with ourselves.

In Essence
We will know the full law of God only when we truly understand and live the purpose of Jesus’ coming: to demonstrate that the divine and the human are not two but one.
Through Him, the original unity lost in Eden is restored. The “promised land” is the awakened state of consciousness in which we realize that we live, move, and have our being in God—and that God lives in us.
Affirmation
"The Lord my God is One, and I am one with Him."
In every thought, in every breath, in every act,
I remember that His life is my life, His love is my love, His will is my will.
There is no separation — only the One Presence expressing through me.
I live, move, and have my being in the Oneness of God.
Prayer
O Father of all light and love,
Thou who art One in all creation — teach me to see Thee in every face and in every form.
As Jesus fulfilled Thy law in perfect love, help me also to fulfill Thy purpose in me.
Let my heart be still before Thee, that I may hear Thy voice saying, “Be still and know that I am God.”
Cleanse me of every thought that divides, every desire born of self,
and awaken within me the remembrance that I and the Father are one.
May Thy Spirit of Oneness guide my thoughts, my words, and my deeds this day,
that I may serve as a channel of Thy peace and healing in the world.
In the name and presence of the Christ within, I pray.
Amen.
Meditation
Sit in quietness and breathe gently.
Let each breath remind you: “In Him I live, and move, and have my being.”
With each inhale, feel the light of the One Life filling you.
With each exhale, release all sense of separation or limitation.
Visualize a radiant light in your heart — the Christ Light —
expanding outward until it fills your entire being,
and then flows beyond you, joining the light in all creation.
Rest in that awareness: There is only One.
Hear inwardly the words of the Master:
“Father, that they may be one, even as we are one.”
Stay in the silence, letting love and unity dissolve every barrier between yourself and God,
until all that remains is peace — and the deep knowing that
“It is finished.” The work of separation is ended. The Oneness is realized.
