paralleling ASFG 1 lesson on “THE LORD THY GOD IS ONE”
BIBLE READING: EXODUS 20:2-7
ASFG Lesson 11: The Lord Thy God Is One
(page 83)
Summary of the Lesson
This lesson teaches that true unity with God—the realization that “the Lord thy God is One”—is the ultimate spiritual goal. It links Moses’ revelation of God as a jealous and consuming fire with Jesus’ final prayer that humanity might share in the oneness and glory He had with the Father “before the world was.”
The key message is: There is only one Source, one Law, one Power, one God. All creation expresses that unity, and all separation—sin, sickness, confusion—comes from forgetting it.
Jesus’ Last Prayer and Its Fulfillment
Jesus’ final prayer (John 17) was that all might be one with the Father as He is—sharing divine glory and consciousness. This lesson says that to experience that oneness is to return to our original spiritual state—the glory we shared with God “before the world was.”
It’s not a distant event, but a realization we can awaken to now, through aligning our will and nature with the divine.
“A Jealous God” and “Consuming Fire”
When Moses described God as jealous or a consuming fire (Exodus 20:5; Deuteronomy 4:24), he was not portraying human jealousy, but expressing a spiritual law of unity:
God, being One, cannot coexist with “other gods” (false ideals, misplaced desires, divided loyalties).
To say God is “jealous” means that the divine nature is continually drawing all things back to Oneness, burning away impurities and false attachments.
The consuming fire is not punishment, but the purifying energy of divine law, transforming error into harmony.
Thus, “jealous” symbolizes God’s unwavering demand for unity—because separation is impossible in divine reality.
The Law and Its Fulfillment
Jesus said He came not to destroy the Law but to fulfill it (Matthew 5:17–18).
The Law of God is perfect order, the unchanging principle that sustains creation. When we violate divine law—through selfishness, division, or material obsession—we feel the natural consequence: pain, confusion, or spiritual “burning.”
These experiences are not divine wrath, but the result of moving against the current of Oneness.
Just as fire purifies gold, divine law purifies the soul until it reflects its original harmony with God.
Misplaced Worship and Inner Confusion
When we put anything—wealth, pleasure, ego, fear—before God, we lose our inner balance. The lesson explains that this creates confusion in mind, body, and soul, because these three aspects must operate under a single spiritual ideal to remain whole.
God is the only true source of life, supply, and order.
Forgetting this leads to feelings of lack and disorder—spiritual symptoms of disconnection.
The Body as a Microcosm of the Universe
The text uses a biological metaphor:
Each corpuscle (cell) in the body contains positive and negative forces that reflect the universe. If a cell “goes astray” (acting outside its purpose), disease results.
Similarly, humanity is a cell in the body of creation. When our will opposes divine order, we create discord that affects the whole. Free will allows us to act contrary to law—but the law still operates, bringing correction until balance is restored.
Sin and the Misuse of Spirit
Cayce’s lesson traces sin back to spirit, not matter. Evil began when a spiritual being (Lucifer) misapplied divine power through self-will, seeking independence from God. Humanity then followed the same pattern—misusing divine energy by choosing separation.
This means that evil has no separate origin; it is the misdirection of God’s creative energy by the will.
Just as a diseased cell began as part of the body, the fallen spirit began as part of God’s creation.
The Path of Redemption and Fulfillment
To become “one with God,” we must again align our will with the divine law—to fulfill it, as Jesus did.
This is the process of spiritual healing and atonement (“at-one-ment”), the realization that all life, power, and love flow from a single Source.
The purification of the soul, the harmony of the mind, and the health of the body all depend on this alignment.
When every part of us—mental, physical, and spiritual—recognizes that “the Lord thy God is One,” we manifest the glory that Jesus prayed we might share.
Core Insight
“God is one consuming fire, one force, one power. He is the whole law.”
This means:
There is no real separation in the universe.
What we call evil or sickness is misapplied divine energy.
The divine law operates as a purifying fire, restoring harmony through experience.
Oneness with God is not belief—it is the natural state realized through obedience, love, and understanding.
In Essence
Jesus’ last prayer = Desire for humanity’s perfect oneness with God.
Moses’ “jealous God” = Expression of the divine law’s uncompromising unity.
Breaking the law = Experiencing the purifying fire of correction.
Healing and salvation = Realigning the mind, body, and spirit under one spiritual ideal.
Final realization = “The Lord thy God is One”—and so are we, in Him.
Affirmation
“The Lord my God is One.
In that Oneness I live, move, and have my being.
There is no separation, no lack, no other power.
The consuming fire of divine love purifies all within me.
I am one with the Source of all life, wisdom, and strength.”
Prayer
O Lord, Thou who art One Power and One Presence,
let me see Thy glory as Jesus prayed —
the glory we shared before the world was.
Burn away within me all that is unlike Thee;
make me pure in heart, that I may know Thee as One.
Teach me to love Thee with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength,
that my life may reflect Thy unity and peace.
In every thought, word, and deed,
may I remember: there is no other god,
no other source, no other will but Thine.
Amen.
Meditation
Centering – Sit quietly and breathe deeply. With each breath, silently affirm:
“There is only One — God, Life, Light, Love.”
Visualization – Imagine a radiant golden light in your heart expanding outward — a consuming fire of love that transforms all confusion or fear into harmony.
Contemplation – Reflect on Jesus’ words: “I and the Father are One.”
Let this awareness dissolve every sense of division between you and God, you and others, spirit and matter.
Silence – Rest for several minutes in stillness, feeling yourself part of that eternal Oneness — the same glory and peace that Christ knew.
Closing Thought – Whisper inwardly:
“The Lord my God is One, and I am one in Him.”
